LED screens have changed the media landscape since they were first introduced in the mid-2000s. Live productions, out-of-home advertising, and even home entertainment reached new heights with the use of LED displays. LED technology has made it possible to view and display lifelike images and elevated the way we consume media
The advertising industry in particular has transitioned from traditional tarpaulin billboards to high-definition LED displays to attract people. However, installing these electronic canvasses is not as simple as unraveling an oversized tarpaulin. Mounting LED screens takes a village and involves complex technology, and a small error might render it useless.
There are two types of LED Screen installation: with cabinet and without cabinet. In this blog, we’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide on each type of installation.
Understanding LED Screens
Before we discuss installation, it’s important that you understand the different types of LED screens as your chosen type will determine what kind of installation you’ll do. Knowing the different types of LED screens, their unique features, and their intended usage will help you make an informed decision.
Types of LED Screens
LED screens can be divided into two categories: those that are used indoors and outdoors. However, they may be further subdivided according to the length of the display’s tenure in the installation location (fixed or rental) and shape (flat, flexible, and irregular). For this blog, we will focus on indoor and outdoor LED screens as they encompass a broader classification of LED displays.
Outdoor LED Screens

Outdoor LED screens are intended to survive extreme environmental conditions in outdoor settings. They are typically used as electronic billboards, signage, and events such as concerts and festivals.
Features of Outdoor LED Screens:
- Weather Resistance: Outdoor LED screens are made of durable materials that can survive extensive exposure to natural elements. They typically feature weatherproof enclosures and/or protective layers that help them still function under direct sunlight, rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.
- High Brightness: Since most outdoor LED screens are installed in open air locations with inconsistent lighting, they have high brightness levels to ensure they are visible at any viewing angle and distance in any lighting condition. This feature is crucial as low low brightness levels affect viability.
- Durability: In addition to being weather-resistant, outdoor LED screens have a sturdy frame composed of high-quality materials that do not wear easily.
- Wide Viewing Angle: In an outdoor setting, viewers are expected to be in different viewing angles, so LED screens must be visible in any viewing angle and distance without losing image quality.
- Remote Monitoring and Control: Many outdoor LED screens are installed in locations that are hard to reach on a regular basis, and being able to monitor them without physically going to the location is crucial. There are LED screens equipped with remote monitoring and control features that let you monitor performance and adjust the settings remotely.
Indoor LED Screens

Indoor LED screens are intended for indoor applications such as malls, retail spaces, and conference rooms. They are typically used to advertise products and services or display information in public spaces like transport hubs. They can also be used to enhance stage designs in concerts.
Features of Indoor LED Screens:
- High Resolution: Indoor LED displays often have higher pixel density and resolution since they are designed for close-distance viewing. With a high pixel density, the LED screen can display images as detailed as possible and with accurate color reproduction.
- Slim Design: As indoor LED screens are not exposed to natural forces, you can get away with installing them without a cabinet (which we will discuss later). This makes them relatively thinner and lighter than outdoor LED screens. Additionally, the slim design allows for an easy installation.
- Low Power Consumption: Since indoor LED screens are installed where lighting can be controlled, they consume less energy than their outdoor counterparts as their brightness levels don’t have to adapt to unpredictable outdoor lighting conditions. This also helps you save on operating and maintenance costs in the long run.
How the Type of LED Screen Affects Installation
The type of LED screen, whether indoor or outdoor, can affect your installation procedure choice as different installation locations require different materials, build quality, and design.
Outdoor LED Screen Installation Considerations
- Weatherproofing: Outdoor LED screens need weatherproof materials that can withstand any weather conditions. This involves choosing LED panels that have a protective coating and enclosing them in weatherproof cabinets.
- Structural Support: With the additional weight of metal cabinets, the structural stability of the display’s frame and base is crucial. Build a metal frame from thick metal tubes and ensure you follow the structural design to a tee.
- Power and Connectivity: Consider how you will power and connect your outdoor LED screen to data. Use power cables and Ethernet cables that are suitable for outdoor use, and make sure you have sufficient length.
- Accessibility: Some outdoor locations may require a more complex installation procedure, especially those suspended in air or hanging from a building’s facade. These installations may require specialized equipment such as a crane, lift, or scaffolding.
Indoor LED Screen Installation Considerations
- Space Constraints: In indoor installations, space may be limited especially in malls and retail spaces. Carefully measure the space before deciding on the size of the space. Consider if there will be enough working area for installation and maintenance.
- Noise and Heat Management: With limited space comes the problem with ventilation. LED screens produce heat, and leaving them turned on for an extended period could cause overheating if not managed properly. Consider installing cooling fans and heat sinks to help manage heat.
What are LED Cabinets

A LED display cabinet is the backbone of a module. The cabinet serves as the frame of the LED module, containing all its internal components and protecting them from man-made and natural forces. There are various types of LED cabinets depending on the materials they’re made of:
- Iron: Iron cabinets are the most common type of cabinet in the market for both indoor and outdoor use. They typically feature a two-door opening at the back for easy access to internal components. While they offer weather protection, they are prone to rust and are very heavy and bulky.
- Die-cast aluminum: Die-cast aluminum cabinets are molded into the module, ensuring a snug fit and weather protection. They are lightweight and can be easily transported.
- Magnesium alloy: Magnesium alloy cabinets are made from magnesium combined with other elements. They are known for their heat-dissipating qualities and durability. However, the choice of materials makes them more expensive than other cabinet finishes.
- Carbon fiber: Carbon fiber cabinets are ultra-thin, lightweight, and durable, allowing for an easier installation.
- Nanopolymer: Nanopolymer cabinets are shock-proof despite their lightweight design.
Outdoor LED Display Installation Steps (with Cabinet)

Before proceeding with the installation, secure the following materials:
- Steel tubes
- Display cabinet
- Connecting plates
- Bolts
- Ethernet cable
- AC cable
- Wrench
- Video processor
- Debugging and sending programs
Step 1: Survey the Location
Assess the installation location first. Check the surroundings for any potential obstructions. Also consider the visibility in the area, how much sunlight it receives, and its accessibility for maintenance.
Measure the area and record the dimensions to make sure the finished LED screen fits the installation location. You should consider the viewing distance from the viewers’ perspective while determining the screen’s size.
Determine how to install the LED display based on the site environment. The column type is used on the open ground, and the wall-mounted, embedded, or suspended type is used on the building surface, but the load-bearing position of the building needs to be determined.
Step 2: Build the Frame

A solid display starts with a well-built frame. It guarantees that the LED cabinet can endure any weather conditions and offers support for it. When constructing the frame, the module’s size will be essential. Usually, the frame is constructed from two different sizes of 6-meter steel tubes: 4 x 4 cm or 4 x 8 cm and 2 x 2 cm. The frame is created by welding these steel tubes together, leaving a 700–1000mm gap for rear maintenance purposes, you need also to pay attention to the door of the cabinet can be opened normally and will not interfere with the steel structure to facilitate smooth maintenance in the future.
When hanging the display, a crane might be required, depending on where the installation will be done. For a safe installation, consider working with professionals.
Step 3: Attach the LED Cabinet to the Frame

After adjusting the flatness of the front of the cabinet and the gap between the cabinets, using the correct bolts and connector plates, each LED cabinet is placed side-by-side to form one big display. Using M10 x 60mm bolts, screw the connection plate to the 4 x 4 centimeter steel tube.
Step 4: Signal Cable Connection
After installing the cabinets to the steel structure, we need to connect its signal cables.
Connect the video processor or sending device from the control computer with HDMI/VGA/DVI/network cable, etc., then use the network cable to connect the sending device to the first receiving card on the LED screen, and then connect receiving cards 2, 3, 4 in series… until the connection is completed the entire LED display.

The following is a detailed video of the connection operation between the video processor, the control computer, and the LED display.
Step 5: AC Cable Connection
The AC cable connection is very important. It is the necessary firmware to provide a normal power supply to the entire LED display. Improper operation may cause the components to burn. The connection sequence is to use 3-core 2.5 square AC cables from the power distribution cabinet to connect to the LED screen. Powered by the whole body, the load of a 3-core 2.5 square cable is usually less than 3600W.
It should be noted that the brown wire represents the live wire, the blue wire represents the neutral wire, and the yellow-green wire represents the ground wire. We need to use a multimeter to test that all wiring is OK before starting to power on the LED display.

AC Cable Connection
Step 6: Debugging the LED display
You need to debug the LED display according to the control software that you are using. Common control software includes NovaLCT, HDplay, HDset, LEDset, LEDstudio…
If the display of the cabinet part is abnormal, you can import the receiving card program provided by the supplier into the receiving card interface in the software, and then send it to the screen for solidification;
Suppose the internal display of a single cabinet is normal, but the connections between the cabinets are disordered. In that case, you can connect to the display screen of the software, reconnect according to the order of the network cables connected to the LED display (looking at the front of the LED screen), send, and solidify.
Step 7: Test the Display
After turning on the LED display, make sure that every part is operating as it should. Examine the display using the control system for problems such as dead pixels or uneven coloration.
Display content on the LED screen via a video processor. Additionally, content can be streamed by Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or HDMI.
Step 8: Do Regular Maintenance Checks
Make sure the LED display is regularly inspected for wear and tear. Natural disaster damage is a greater risk for outdoor LED screens. Verify that the protection elements, such as the waterproofing, are still functioning properly.
Indoor LED Display Panel Installation Steps (without Cabinet)
Cabinets are not necessary for installing LED displays indoors. Magnets are used to attach the panels to the rectangular tube firmly. Cabinet displays are far more expensive; this is far less bulky. Nevertheless, installations of this kind are only possible in spaces inside of 20 square meters or fewer.
The advantage of the LED display without cabinets is that the smaller size and weight can save transportation costs. If the user urgently needs to use the LED display, the LED module, the power supply, and the receiving card all parts of the LED display can be directly by air. It can even complete the delivery of LED displays to customers within 10 days.
Before proceeding with the installation, secure the following materials:
- Steel tubes
- LED modules
- Magnets
- AC cables
- Ethernet cables
- Video processor
- Pre-maintenance tools
- Laptop for the software
- Wrench
Step 1: Survey the Location
This kind of installation requires a steel frame, just like mounting LED displays with cabinets. Examine the area first, then create the structure. When choosing the size of the display, make a note of the proportions that would fit the space and take the lighting, viewing angle, and viewing distance into account.
Step 2: Assemble the Frame
Although cabinets are not necessary for this kind of installation, a steel frame is still required for support. Note the dimensions of the LED modules because their arrangement will affect the design and specifications of the frame. Regular bolts are replaced with expansion or chemical bolts because there are no cabinets to screw into the frame.
Depending on their size, these light, cabinet-free screens can be manually placed. More complicated installations could require additional equipment.
Step 3: Power supply and receiving card accessory wiring
To improve work efficiency, the cable connection of the power supply and receiving card should be assembled as much as possible before installing it on the Tubes.
1. Connect the DC5V cable to the power supply, “+” to the red 5V cable, “-” to the black 5V cable.
2. The cable of the receiving card needs to be connected in sequence according to the length designed in the drawing. It is recommended to test the wiring of one receiving card in advance and show that it is normal before arranging the wiring of the remaining receiving cards.

Step 4: Install the Receiving Cards
Fix the receiving card on the side of the tube according to the position in the operating instructions, and route the signals according to the drawing. Use network cables to connect the receiving cards in series.

Step 5: Install the Power Supply
Secure the power supply to the side of the rectangular tube using self-tapping screws through a mounting bracket, as the wires are not enclosed within a cabinet. Determine the maximum number of LED modules each power supply can support both vertically and horizontally.

After the power supply is installed, you need to connect the 3×2.5mm2 wires in series with the power supply. “L” is connected to the brown wire, “N” is connected to the blue wire, and “G” is connected to the yellow-green wire. Please also note that one main 3×2.5mm2 AC cable can carry less than 12 pcs 300W power supplies and less than 18 200W power supplies. If the site environment is harsh, such as high temperature, the number of carried power supplies will be even less.

Step6:Attach the LED Modules
When installing the LED module, you need to pay attention to the direction of the arrow on the back of the LED module, connect the cable and DC5v power supply line, and finally attach it directly to the TUBE with magnets.
Flat cable connection
According to the arrangement of the receiving cards in the arrangement drawing, the corresponding LED modules are connected in order with flat cables. You need to pay attention to the positions of the interfaces J1, J2, J3, and J4… of the receiving card corresponding to the LED module.

DC5v cable connection
The other end of the DC5v cable output from the power supply is connected to the VH4 interface for the power supply to the module.

After connecting the flat cable, D5V cable, and the LED module adsorbed on the tube, adjust the flatness and gap of the LED module, And you can get a perfect display effect.
Step 7: LED display program debugging
After all hardware facilities are installed, the LED display can display correctly only after correct software debugging. Usually, you can ask your supplier to provide smart setting files (RCG, RCFGX, SSR…), import them directly, send them to the receiving card, and then solidify them.
After sending the receiving card program, the entire LED screen displays many small rectangles. They are not connected to the entire LED screen. At this time, you can connect the entire screen according to the actual arrangement of the receiving card on the sending card interface, or you can directly import the supply. Send, save, and solidify the screen connection files (scr, sss,…) provided by the supplier to complete the debugging of the LED display.
Step 8: Test the Display
Press the test button and turn on the display. Information in the colors red, blue, green, line, field, and point will all be shown on the screen. To verify whether the screen is functioning properly, examine the wires and utilize the program. Provide a multi-screen file so that the separate modules can be joined to create a single bug display.
Some LED Display Installation Tips
- Identify how many LED modules are required for the complete display and keep extras on hand at all times.
- LED modules have pressure-sensitive corners. Be sure to treat them with caution and kindness.
- Make sure the display is waterproof if you plan to install it outdoors.
- Use industrial-grade circuit chips to avoid mistakes when installation in cold climates.
- Invest in an LED display ventilation system.
- For safety and security, think about adding lightning arresters if you’re mounting the LED display in an elevated area.
Conclusion
Installing LED screens requires careful planning and execution. It is crucial to follow step-by-step guidelines to ensure the LED display is installed and will work properly. Whether you’re installing an LED wall on a building facade or a digital billboard inside a mall, proper planning and following best practices are important in ensuring you have the best display you could ask for.
